What are the various types of hysterectomies?

Hysterectomy is a surgical operation involving the removal of the uterus.

However, other surrounding organs like the cervix ,the fallopian tubes, and the ovaries may also be removed. This will depend on your medical condition and the reason for the hysterectomy.
Therefore, depending upon the organs removed along with the uterus the various types of hysterectomy are as follows:

Total or Complete Hysterectomy:

Involves removal of the uterus and cervix, while keeping the fallopian tubes and ovaries.

This is the most commonly performed type of hysterectomy.

Sub-total or partial hysterectomy:

Involves removal of the upper part of the uterus only, keeping the cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries in place.

Total hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy:

Involves removal of the uterus and cervix, together with one or both sets of ovaries and fallopian tubes. This is usually done in cases of severe endometriosis, adhesions, infections and uterine cancer.

Radical hysterectomy:

This type of hysterectomy is usually performed to treat cancer. It involves removal of the uterus, the cervix, both ovaries and fallopian tubes, the upper part of vagina, the supporting tissues (parametrium) and the pelvic lymph nodes.
